Out of the chasm and into the chiasm

God & only God, has a marvelous way of redemption. The depth, breadth and width of His wisdom and grace are astounding. To see it born out in ordinary & flawed people as God does His work in this broken world sustained by more than natural elements is the main wonder of this world (if I may be so bold).

I don’t have to travel to any specific land to see the wonder and glory of God in His creation or in His blood bought redemption of humanity. A small trip up the road is enough to meet with God and His people in a special way, sweet communion and deep communion. So high I can’t get over it, so wide I can’t get round it, so deep/low I can’t get under it. In the ancient world as much as the modern, God comes to His people and leads them according to His promises.

When one is enough

Generally we reserve the title of evil for the more extreme acts of indecency in society. If we are reasonably good citizens we wouldn’t think of labeling or seeing ourselves or our society as keepers and doers of evil. But Jesus does. In as much as we are capable of doing good and loving things for our family, our friends & others there still remains within our hearts the very real theological and observable fact that we are fallen beings in need of restoration. Matt 7:7-14.

It is never enough that society should decide what is best and normalize it with some sense of democratic rule in the name of mere human-ness. Numbers don’t necessarily equate to truth no matter how great that number may be, especially in a world full of so many lies and broken promises where money and favours talk a lot, for we cannot mathematize righteousness.

Jesus in approaching our lost world draws our attention to the faithful and true promises of God that steadfastly declare our need of salvation, nothing has changed in that regard, this world shall undergo a coming judgment and God in His mercy has provided a very real peace offering with precious life giving blood.

Politics and governments and our business & tax dollars will not save us, the environment will not save us, our math and algorithms cannot save us, our humanness cannot save us. Parents, ministers and teachers cannot save us, doctors, nurses and pharmaceuticals either, as good or evil as these things may or may not be… only Jesus can save us.

Pioneer & establisher of peace and justice

Power and authority abused should come as no surprise really in a sin infected world. From afar we get used to it, closer to home the intensity and pain magnifies. In families, schools, churches, businesses, corporations, banks, hospitals, politics, media outlets, police and government abuse and manipulation is rediscovered time and time again. Even when exposed after attempted cover ups the punishment may not fit the crime which turns out to be another abuse of power and authority.

To always look on the bright side of life (the song) would be a pretty ignorant approach even if it helped as a coping or crutch mechanism, nothing wrong with having a laugh but it won’t really fix the root cause or problem. Evil is powerful and destructive to all things good and it appears to roam free in a type of uniform force.

Like a monster crushing & creating mayhem through a city scape but far more subtle is ancient and modern evil. It comes clothed in cloaks, suits, dresses and T shirts in and out of fashion. Evil comes in human flesh from the human mind and heart. Evil knows how to take on the form of goodness and respectability but at its heart it serves darkness alone and looking on the bright side is not enough, we must embrace the light. There should be no equality when it comes to good and evil.  This was John’s message in the wilderness of Judea but equally significant to our day in the jungle we call society. Matt 3:1-12. Evil shall not have the last laugh. God provides a way out of sin and a way through evil.He didnt have to do it, but he did.

The left and right of humanity

Luke 23:38-43. There was a written notice above him, which read: THIS IS THE KING OF THE JEWS.One of the criminals who hung there hurled insults at him: “Aren’t you the Messiah? Save yourself and us!” But the other criminal rebuked him. “Don’t you fear God,” he said, “since you are under the same sentence? We are punished justly, for we are getting what our deeds deserve. But this man has done nothing wrong.” Then he said, “Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom.” Jesus answered him, “Truly I tell you, today you will be with me in paradise.”

Terrible tantrums are not just for two year olds, even adults can and do “go off” and furthermore find “reason” for justification. Spinning things is how we roll, politicians, sports people, the media, the religious, the non religious, criminals, police, lawyers, accountants, banks and otherwise. We have ways of getting our way and lots of people can be fooled in the process (but not God). In this day and age like any other we can blame all kinds of things on our bad behaviour and our bad response to bad behaviour.

We all want justice (or a laugh) when it comes to our cause and we all want mercy when we have stepped over the line because it is very much all about us. Yet when we look at the foot of the cross of Golgotha in the gospels and up at the brutally Romanesque fastened feet and hands we don’t see a lot of winging and whining like a squeaky wheel, but rather a solemn silence and brief cry to God alone. It is a sublime display of humility with many an accompanied joke, cartoon and offencive art work (free speech and all that).

So when (not if) you are being crucified or unjustly treated remember to do what Jesus did, entrust yourself to the Fathers care and safe keeping. Don’t take matters into your own hands, many a saint has tried that methodology only to fail miserably, rather seek first the kingdom of God, not the kingdom of self-righteous mankind.Rom 8:1-17.

The undermining mind

To be religious is to think, to be scientific is to think, to be secular is to think, to philosophise is to think. It is not sexuality that is fluid but thinking. There are lots of ways to think. Socratic, imaginably, humorously, atheistic, theistic, emotionally, experiential, assumption - presumptuously, deductively, critically, destructively, deviously, defiantly, proudly and so on. Dan 4:19-27. We can even think in a thoughtless manner. Thinking is a valuable tool and a dangerous past time.

And that is why wisdom and truth is always better than propped up knowledge and thinking that is artificial, camouflaged and fake intelligence. In the God who knows all things we get the bigger picture and the fuller cup. God knows human thinking is not all it’s cracked up to be. In many respects it is weak and miserable and lacking faith in wonderful and dangerous things unseen.

In the wild goose chase and bizarre algorithm that is earthly thinking, Scripture allows us to take flight in freedom, not fear. Beyond the big columns and tangents of academia and corporate data farms of information and man centred thinking intrigued with the brain, body and behaviour we are set free to know the mind of Christ and the Spirit of God who was before all things.Col 2:6-15.It's not where its at as far as the world goes (east or west or north or south ) but it is where God is at.
