A price is paid (in full)

Do you like traffic signs, do you think they are there to make you afraid or to keep you from harm’s way? I think for the most part they are for my own & others good. Lots of people claim that the Holy Bible & God is all to do with fear and phobias but it is much more about doing what is good and finding safe passage. Lots of people twist the Bibles teachings with intent and motive, they don’t want to recognise the love and wisdom of God so they make up their own rules for what they believe about God, life, living and death. Prov 14:12.

This world is filled with alternate meanings and explanations and they cannot and are not all right. We live in a world where many wrongs are multiplied and the truth is hard to find. In this sense the Bible is like buried treasure & knowing God through Jesus is just the best and greatest thing ever. There is no better discovery. Matt 13:45-46.

Bigger than the universe and coming to a head

Nobody ever outgrows Scripture; the Book widens and deepens with our years.
Charles Spurgeon

One of the many ironies of post-modern belief as an imposition is that it actually fulfils biblical revelation and prophecy as well as denying biological science for something other than. In seeking to move away from religion, it has created its own god and way, It that must be obeyed, an unknown god similar to the one in Athens. Acts 17:23-34.

Turning from God to idols ancient or modern or postmodern is one and same thing, a truth that is not a truth for truth alone belongs to God and His Word. John 1:1-18.

Our hands can fashion and shape many things with the help of our mind but they cannot work salvation from sin and death, try as we might. To measure this or that and calculate to infinity but totally miss the eternal God that came down in infinite mercy is the gravest of errors that comes with massive proportion.

There is only one 'safe' place

Already I am somewhat ancient as I look back on the many changes that have taken place in the world and my country of birth. Some of those changes have been rapid and radical regarding culture and belief. I wouldn’t call it interesting times but rather tumultuous like a restless ocean blown about.

So here I sit on my figurative rocking chair on my figurative veranda looking out on a world rushing on, busy making history like so many generations before them. History is a messy business and it often repeats, so when people think they are doing something new it is much older and much closer to home than they realise (much closer to the second law of thermodynamics and the Scriptural bondage to decay)

The tables have been turned before, the tables will be turned again. History knows it, God knows it, and Scripture declares it. Central to history is Christ and not the latest art, philosophy or political movement. Obscure at times in the Old Testament, Obvious in the fulfilling New Testament. Eternal things are not hampered by transient trends and God’s promises and faithfulness are truly unbreakable.Matt 7:24-29.

Luke 8:22-25.

Big Hands? Strong hands.

“A warm golden light suggests something sacred and eternal in this daily scene where the struggle to survive takes place. During his years of preparatory studies, Millet contemplated how best to convey the sense of repetition and fatigue in the peasants' daily lives. Lines traced over each woman’s back lead to the ground and then back up in a repetitive motion identical to their unending, backbreaking labour. Along the horizon, the setting sun silhouettes the farm with its abundant stacks of grain, in contrast to the large shadowy figures in the foreground. The dark homespun dresses of the gleaners cut robust forms against the golden field, giving each woman a noble, monumental strength”. (Wikipedia)

The have and the have nots, the rich and the poor and manual labour… There is no denying the benefits of mechanisation but that too comes at a cost to the pocket and the environment as we move towards robotics and electronics to “infinity and beyond” with our wonderful ‘toys’ in the modern composition of national interests, corporate power and small business and lots of plastic that makes its way into the family home.

And work still makes us weary and tired, our feet ache and our backs get sore and stiff and usually there is still another bill to pay or on the way. Yes there is a lot of fingertip tapping as our eyes take in more and more as we buy this and trade in that or give it away in charity. Thank the good Lord for rest, sustenance, substance and guidance and His school of realism in a world with stars in its eyes.

Who is the hero? The elite, the working class, the middle class, the entrepreneur, the genius, the charity worker, the educated ?Who is the villain? Capitalism, Communism, Socialism, Barter-ism, The Press/Media, The Police, The Judicial Rulers?

Timing is essential

There is something strikingly wonderful about visiting farmland for me, especially on a beautiful autumn day under the sun in all of its brilliance. The birds seem to appreciate the agricultural side of things too where bugs get to swarm and crawl about. In many respects it is another world, a distant world from the the bricks 'n' mortar and concrete slabs and asphalt roads that pave the surrounding land.

There is a busy-ness there of course, productivity in the ecology and the diligent farmer or their helpers out in the fields and keeping track of seasons, clouds, winds, rainfall, soil structure, prices etc, but the farmer also must wait for the harvest.

In the book of James we are faithfully directed to look to the farmer as an example of patience and busyness in light of the Lord's coming with the encouragement to persevere in faith and obedience as the world and the devil continues on in its rejection and eradication program of God & His salvation via various means.James 5:7-12.

The Real Avenger because everything matters, big and small, seen and unseen.

Scripture informs us that we like the earth were purpose built for life and living with God at the centre. Enjoyment and function abounded and interacted like massive gears of infinite wisdom across the living and non- living universe. But since the fall sin and death is everywhere and so common place that it has become acceptable and normative in a behavioural sense.

It is a far cry from the world we know today that has deliberately forgotten God and opted for faith in blind chance and random acts. This world lives on borrowed time and borrowed life for which it has no solid answers for our existence and will also be required to give account and receive the consequences of its rebellious acts.

It is here where humanity begins to make its own religions, beliefs (and excuses) that one way or another mirror God or what He has made. But only and ever only will we find the real picture in God. We may like to think that we are masters or disciples of our universe but we are nothing more than a drop in the vast, vast ocean of God’s story and world.Rev 20:1-15.

Chance of the gaps: Its just our way of explaining stuff we cannot really fathom or accept.

“There is a popular image of human evolution that you’ll find all over the place … On the left of the picture there’s an ape … On the right, a man … Between the two is a succession of figures that become ever more like humans … Our progress from ape to human looks so smooth, so tidy. It’s such a beguiling image that even the experts are loath to let it go. But it is an illusion.”

Bernard Wood (prof. of human origins, George Washington Univ.), “Who are we?” New Scientist, 2366 (26 Oct. 2002), p. 44.

“The belief that life on earth arose spontaneously from non-living matter, is simply a matter of faith in strict reductionism and is based entirely on ideology.”

Hubert P. Yockey, 1992 (a non-creationist). Information Theory and Molecular Biology, Cambridge University Press, UK, p. 284.

The proverb of all proverbs

Just to touch on a few things to keep us going for a few centuries and millennia... Jesus was/is religious and anti – religious, a pauper and a king, servant and a master, human and God, flesh and Spirit, sacrifice & Judge, homeless but holding all the store houses of heaven and earth, Capitalist and communist, dividing line and breaker of barriers. And only He is able, the lion and the lamb for pre history, pre  ancient, modern, post-modern, and post death times.Information & power instilled with wisdom before the world began.

Rom 16:27. to the only wise God be glory forever through Jesus Christ! Amen

In the active silence

The stars are like sand, you just can’t count them because there are so many. You may have the desire or will to do it for whatever reason but the wise thing would be to say no, it’s just not possible in real terms because of our limited nature in comparison to God the Spirits creative power.

That’s not defeatism but realism and the blessing of being able to genuinely bask in the unknown and in the mystery. It is not God that requires us to have an answer to everything…that is man’s desire which competes against the more we discover the more we realise how little we really know.

Knowledge out of kilter with the wisdom of God is going to be looking in the wrong places for answers and satisfaction. Ancient and modern religions and philosophies have often thought they could match it with the one eternal God.

Faith in nature alone and faith in human intellect focus on the gifts of God but not God the giver of all things. People want the creation without the Creator and redemption without Redeemer and justice without a judge or king and freedom without restraint which really equates to mankind wanting to be a type of God which equates to humanity rebelling against God.

In Jesus Christ all these things come together through Him.The Roman roads, Greek geometry, Babylonian flames and power, Celtic and Scandinavian design, Egyptian and South American pyramids and Hebrew law all find their beginning and end in the Alpha & Omega in a new world like it was in the beginning, world without end restored in the fullness of time by the fullness of God.Rev 22:13-16.

Angelic Wars

If society accepts terminology/ad hominem name calling like homophobia, islamophobia etc. then logic would follow that society is also influenced by religious freedom phobia, Christ-o- phobic, God-o-phobic dogma.

The LGBTQ etc. etc. crusade that is supposed to offer freedom and love has its conversion therapies and indoctrination programs. This new religion is reaching out to school children with the assistance of government policy. It is also putting innocents to the political sword because of religious convictions.

History repeats, repeats, repeats, the cultural warfare is on the surface, the spiritual warfare behind. Anyone can claim love is love but without truth you have nothing. “To walk out of His will is to walk into nowhere.” Wrote C.S Lewis but that is putting it mildly. To walk away from God is to draw near to satanic influence and verses that may indeed seem to have an element of cultural freedom about it at first.

When Jesus said He was God and the way He wasn't kidding, it was a life and death thing that also spoke of eternal consequences. There is only one God and one way out of this war to perfect peace that has a lot more to it than just "culture".John 14:6.

The unseen & knowable God

What a consuming fire a volcano is, a liquid lava leviathan with power to positively destroy, untameable, worthy of respect and a much smaller picture of the character and power of God who made and controls all things.

And yet in the promised Christ we can draw near to the one and only true God and know His tender warm heart, loving affection and protective divine acts. So we should come to God with reverence and awe as we worship Him and not the nature that He has made.Heb 12:28.

Psalm 18:1-50

The Big Bucket

Have you ever lost something, wandered around a bit and then retraced your steps in order to find what you were looking for? That is what the Holy Bible is all about. What was lost can be found. What is broken can be fixed.

There is a reason there is a hole in the bucket and there is a reason people keep trying to fix it but only Jesus has what it takes to go all the way, everything else pales into insignificance. Rev 21:5-6.

Many people operate from an assumed belief that nature is all there is and that the answer to everything lies hidden in nature somewhere. But the Bible has a much bigger and richer explanation. It reasons that Jesus was there before the world began and Jesus will be there when the world ends. Not only that but that Jesus came into our very lives and existence motivated by love to conquer evil, sadness and death (something technology cannot do).

Nature is not all there is with all its powerful and wonderful laws and delicate balance. There is also the supernatural that put everything in place to start off with.Col 1:15-23.God chose something incredibly amazing to undo our complicated mess and explanations. Nothing is too hard for God, the sad part is that many ignore the wonderful things that God has done but even there he helps us. God is so good.

He who prepares tables

The royal wedding is pretty big news of late, lots of data in the press about who is going & who isn’t etc. Usually with a big wedding a special feast follows with customary invitations also. Yesterday in a small community hall on a back street in a lesser suburb we heard a sermon on the great banquet. Luke 14:15-24.

Customs were different then, sort of. It seems they were more like a rave party with a late warning call after an initial invite which shouldn’t have been a problem in the not so extreme business that we live with today. But the insincere excuses came then also, to busy, to wrapped up in my own circumstances etc. The justification to ignore the great feast came at great cost but also opened up the door to the seemingly not so important people.

God’s kingdom is like that as the parable (layered meaning) reveals. This is no token gesture or plan B from God. God is generous and hospitable and does not measure us according to our perceived wealth or privilege. Time and again God shows us what really matters most of all.

Silver & gold and the finer things in life cannot compare with the richness of God’s ways, neither can having the best and closest relationship with another if it be not God for all the friends or family you may or may not have, for all things come from His hand. Things in and of themselves that are not that bad can become our slaves and oppressors which lead us away from God, temporarily or eternally depending on the text.

That same invitation is in circulation today inviting people to the kingdom of God demonstrated in Christ Jesus with an encouragement to come and be filled. Isaiah 55:1-13.

Uncommercialised motherhood

Mother’s Day as a 365 day calendar event has rolled around again. It’s good to celebrate mothers who are very much a work in progress and who may even transition into grandmothers and great grandmothers.

Unofficial and un-accredited nurses, doctors, teachers, soldiers, carers, taxi drivers, caterers, finance advisers and cleaners rolled into a one stop being that aint no shop.

The Bible honours motherhood as something praiseworthy and not to be taken lightly or for granted as if they were a God given right or freedom to be abused. Mothers are to be given deep respect and in them we get to see a picture of God who created men and women in His image.

No earthly father loves like Thee,
No mother, e’er so mild,
Bears and forbears as Thou hast done,
With me, Thy sinful child.

F W Faber 1849.

When atheism and the anti-Christ align.

In the modern atheistic world death of the physical body is the assumed end. And in this ensuing trend we find things like Euthanasia and abortion promoted heavily for the modern populous to gently absorb like a toxic deadly chemical to kill off Christianity & the idea of accountability to a Creator as an influence in society.

In influential persuasive operant conditioning universities, local councils, national government and national news outlets and radio channels, the big push dressed up in modern garb has antiquated history. There is a natural inclination to deny God and go our own way and make our own rules.

Whether we like to pass ourselves off as religious or non- religious we all operate from belief. The false idea and clever lie that secular is neutral creates a kingdom that is Anti God & Anti-Christ. What is true of us is just as true for a society that chooses such a path and is creating another religion that is just as old as it is new. Welcome to Anti-Godocracy.

Tender God

On this day the seagulls were basking restfully in the sunshine as the tide came in with tiny lapping rippling waves glistening on the surface of the water that was reflecting the brilliant light and glow of the sun.

You may not think so but worshiping God can be a similar thing as His words ripple in from a distant shore to the eager heart and mind. Washing over with words of love and wisdom with a tender motion and a brilliant light, the gentle messenger speaks and illuminates the being of His children. In as much as there are storms and strong rips and tides, there is joy and sublime activity in the seemingly still and quiet part of the worship service.

Corporate slavery

I’m not that much into Rugby (soccer/football is my main thing) but its funny/peculiar when you hear about the Israel Folau ‘controversy’. Some people think he should remain silent on his beliefs and stick just to the ball game. But nobody is telling Qantas to just stick to keeping planes in the air. It is allowed to use its business platform to promote an atheistic belief. Qantas can preach but Israel Folau cant. Money and sport can talk all they want, but Christians cant. What an odd and materialistic religion this modern world abides by and seeks to dominate others with as it speaks about controlling oneself as it cracks its whip of words.

Other "F" Words

It was claimed from the pulpit the other day that Gideon was a man driven by fear as he threshed some grain in a wine press out of sight, to me it was not fear but a wise thing to do if you want to keep your grain in an invaded land often raided and attacked…just saying.

Gideon’s concern is that if God was with them how come all those terrible things were happening in his treasured homeland. The God who had delivered his ancestors out of Egypt didn’t seem to be interested or care about them at all. But we know it was the other way around, God’s people were not so interested in the things of God, earthly and devilish stuff seemed far more rewarding.

And so God provides the young man of faith with some divine assurance and instructs him to tear down his father’s enticing false gods. Gideon obeys and does it by night because he is fearful of his family and his townspeople. Family and friends can be a stumbling block to faith as they lead in an alternate direction away from the living God. Gideon is a man of fear and faith not fear and flight in the time of the Judges. Israel’s unamusing roller-coaster walk with God as a nation but just as pertinent for today.
Jdg 6:1-32. Heb 11:32.

This is my story, this is my song.

It is not just the crippled and physically disabled that need healing or assistance, neither is it just the mentally ill and it’s not just the homeless that need comfort and solace. For we all are, one way or another in great need when it comes to the chasm that alienates us from God and one another and even our very selves.

And the Saints continue to need God just as the sinner does. Sanctification and salvation are both fully dependant upon God regardless of our assumed power, strength and wisdom.

In the Godhead everything comes together back to where it all beautifully began. Father, Son & Holy Spirit in perfect unity and harmony.

Travelling in time

The vinyl record along with its player work hand in hand bringing to our ears an earlier event in history. The record and the player with speakers attached are instrumental in bringing us the message along with our ears and our mind too as we may apply past knowledge and experience to the happening past in the present. A lot of things come into play as the music weaves it spell of organised and improvised sounds that take us into moments of experience that can be sublime, sublime, sublime.

I don’t think I could pick a colour or a group of colours to symbolise or represent the sublime because sublime is something other…Perhaps a grand landscape or seascape would better reflect the sublime. The sheer and immense beauty and wonder of creation in comparison to a tiny human (sublime in itself all things considered) in the scheme of things, sublime, sublime, invisible qualities that stem from God’s eternal power & divine nature. Gen 1:1.

Original God

The big push to elevate science as god into the modern mind and keep it there for society to be guided and misguided by has many devout students, disciples and teachers. The age of Reason and Rationalism was in many ways a rock and roll moment that swept the globe. The sex, drugs and free love (is there such a thing apart from Jesus) came later along with Eastern Mystics.

And know we find that historical & observational science itself is becoming less rationalistic, more religious (it already was) and very mystical and musical indeed. It seems the mind can overrule the biology and body with a little help from pharmacy and surgery as we become our own gods of creativity. How extremely ironic (don’t you think).

It is a very transitional world filled with apostasies of all kinds, apostasies that mirror the one and only moment in the garden when disobedience became shame and guilt- sin and death with consequences that were already spoken and spelt out. Ancestry/Hereditary/Geography/Archaeology/Natural/

Our personal & societal struggle with knowledge and of good and evil and one another (and ourselves) reflects our alienation from God who alone understands our identity politics. Scripture is not out to flatter or fool us and neither does it recommend the destructive path and final doom as a way of salvation. Jesus is the only way, the only redemption that truly delivers. In the hardware and software and alleged age of information, He is the original & incorruptible. There is infinite wisdom in the wooden cross/tree. 1 Cor 1:18-31.
