A heart of gold

Prosperity in this life or the next cannot be bought says Scripture. Satan offered it to Jesus [Mt 4:9] but it wasn’t his to give in the first place, however this doesn’t stop humanity from seeking wealth or good health as an ultimate pursuit above knowing Christ. People invest in & rely heavily on the earthly realm but Scripture reminds the reader & hearer that something much greater & more lasting exists.

Godliness with contentment is great gain says the Apostle Paul as he relays the heavenly message. Silver, gold & health may have their place, but it’s not top shelf, as far as our hearts are concerned, that should belong to God. [1 Tim 6:10]

Some people die horrible deaths, others seem to go peacefully & with much dignity. Some people who were in discussion with Jesus made a connection about the type of death a person or persons may have suffered as if their life was more insulting to God.

Jesus gets straight to the point, in terms of the Gospel & the Messiah each individual needs to repent of their indwelling sin & bear fruit… that’s what matters, that’s what counts.

Schools in for summer

Back to school is a bit different to beginning school for the very first time, schools & education sure have changed over the years too.

My first steps in new shoes & a uniform were in a public school starting in kindergarten. I don’t remember much at all but I have a school photo to prove I was there, tiny in form, but probably carrying high hopes for my excited parents. Somewhere along the line I & others would discover my genius (my dad thought so) & the world would go out if its way to make the most of it for me without too much hard work. After all that’s the way it had been for the last five years or so…long live uniformity.

Sadly not every child gets the benefits of a hard working family or loving parents & many carry the scars to prove it. As stories unfold of families, institutions & terrible abuse it takes a lot more than packing up your troubles in your old kit bag & smile, smile, smile.

The experiences in this world can cause many a tear & heartache & as we see, humanity is weak & corrupt in more ways than one. Jesus also experienced a brutal lashing & the failure of a human justice system.
(Isaiah 53:7.)(Luke 22.)

The blood that He shed opened up an avenue of healing that leads to greater things than this world can ever hope to offer, the accounts recorded in Scripture assure me of this, the disciples were convinced of it also…Jesus is the good teacher & the good shepherd.
(Psalm 23.)

Baptism of fire

National Geographic have an article on the dove vs crow & gull incident. I think there is much more to this than the dove being white. I recall a lecture from my art days where the eye detects movement in the first place...not colour(?)

Crows are very brazen & seem to like a bargain....

Birds have pretty good eyesight anyhow. I am thinking more in terms of territorial behaviour mostly, common to all manner of birds & if food is scarce humans & animals will behave in a similar fashion.

The main reason I put this intro in is to take the Sons of an Arky post a bit further.

Like a changing slide with effects, all living things that once enjoyed life are now dead & scattered by the power of a water world, carried here & there to decay into a bed of blackness. The ark alone holds the sound of living things. After the terror & tragedy of the catastrophic deluge which came from the judgement of God a new beginning is heralded for Noah & his family.

A window is opened & a pair of aged hands releases a raven, it spreads it wings & takes to the sky, finding no resting place it returns. The same is done with a dove & by & by it returns with an olive leaf, released once more the dove does not return.

In one way things are getting back to normal yet evil still exists in the soul of humanity & in the prince of the power of the air. With God we see judgement & it is severe yet God also displays mercy in the keeping of Noah, his family & the creatures.

God resumes a relationship that was on the rocks, God abides & God redeems because He is God & God is love. He gives much more than he takes. He gave His life that we might live.

God is

I was reading a small devotion booklet titled “today” It’s from the Back to God hour people. I have a stack of these pocket sized booklets from over the years.  The minister for the month was Jack M Gray & he wrote about worship & styles of worship. Whatever Christian worship style, there is something that must come first…Sincerity. Too keep in tune with the Spirit we must be sincere, thankful & forgiving people.

The economy & the evolution

An interesting read on how one thing can lead to another.

Sons of an Arky.

Noah & his three sons ardently apply their labour in keeping with the promises of God. Faith & obedience working hand in hand.

By faith Noah, when warned about things not yet seen, in holy fear built an ark to save his family. By his faith he condemned the world and became heir of the righteousness that is in keeping with faith. Heb 11:7

In Christ we inherit the blessing of sonship through adoption. It cannot be bought but is freely given.Overcome by the power of God’s grace the spirit moves & we begin to turn from our life of rebellion. God preserves his work of holiness in our lives despite the spiritual battering & pollution.

The final judgment is still to come, for the earths folly is not unnoticed by God, in or outside the church. The day & the hour are unknown as Scripture speaks of readiness.

Therefore, dear friends, since you have been forewarned, be on your guard so that you may not be carried away by the error of the lawless and fall from your secure position. 2 Peter 3:17

Abracadabra & Abba Father

Because things human really can be messy here on earth & God is all powerful it is often argued that God should overlook the injustice & like a magician, wave the wand & make everything reappear again. If He doesn’t do it that way then He must not be there anyway, a bit like a ransom note.

The moment we begin to bring God down to our understanding & level is the moment we become fooled by our own awesomeness & begin to worship the human experience or the created things such as the natural world instead of God the Spirit who is maker of all.

God has not forsaken the world & the human experience in the midst of its tragedy as it appears broken or cut in two. He came & dwelt among us, took on our human frame, hopped into the box of death & felt the blade that we might not be lost in the illusion of sin & the false freedom that lies hidden in its contraption.

It was not Abracadabra that Jesus cried out…

It was now about noon, and darkness came over the whole land until three in the afternoon, for the sun stopped shining. And the curtain of the temple was torn in two. Jesus called out with a loud voice, “Father, into your hands I commit my spirit.”  When he had said this, he breathed his last. The centurion, seeing what had happened, praised God and said, “Surely this was a righteous man.”  When all the people who had gathered to witness this sight saw what took place, they beat their breasts and went away. But all those who knew him, including the women who had followed him from Galilee, stood at a distance, watching these things. Luke 23:44-49

As messy & as junky as the items in these three images appear to be there is not one item that does not exist without design & purpose. You may not know what each item was used for but each holds a specific time, place & purpose. Like the hairs or lack thereof on our head, there is nothing accidental or random about these items. Even the fine particles of dust, dirt & mechanical wear & tear must abide by the greatness & mighty power of God which is immeasurable & unfathomable by merely human measures.

Our hands hold many things…Gods hands hold the whole world & universe in its grand arrangement. He has given us a share in this world & in His image that we may have begun to fathom His awesome being & infinite wisdom. To truly be restored, inside & out, the one eternal God models the Saviour & says build your life on Him.

See. God the Father/ Lords day 10

A selfie & a bird in the hand is worth two in the bush.

In the context of Christianity.

Getting rid of religion is nothing new…it started in Edan & has had a strong following ever since, eat your heart out Kings & Queens, prince & princesses of twitter. World domination is the key, ruling the hearts & minds of the fleshly beings that tread the earth, swim in its waters & fly upon its skies.

In a time when everybody is meant to be themselves, groups & followings are looking for strength in the numbers game. The political machine, the spirit of the age & the zeal of humanity is out to make an impressionable name.

Even within the heart of the saved a battle will rage, but the saved are equipped & blessed with the Spirit through Christ who has overcome. He is our joy, He is our God, He is Jesus & He has saved His people from their sin with all its deadly power & deception much to the devils displeasure & rage as he organises pawns to exercise his craftiness & cunning.

Then the dragon was enraged at the woman and went off to make war against the rest of her offspring—those who keep God’s commands and hold fast their testimony about Jesus. Revelation 12:17

What did he just say?....

He looked pretty old to be into Harry Potter, apparently it was a black Geneva robe according to my wife who has a good grasp of many things like that. This guy was a guest preacher & I guess ordained but probably retired. Within the sermon somehow he summarised Christianity as part mythology. I have no idea how he got to that point or many others for that matter but he stopped making sense to me on several occasions.

Getting back to the part mythology… it seems as if the symbolism, which doesn’t come from the Bible, but is attributed to the four gospel writers may have been what he was intending to convey, especially the eagle which is able to fly heavenward & see the splendour of the sun & therefore the Son more intimately. At times knowledge appears to be given to impress rather than to edify & bless. At times like this I would be grateful for a slow motion replay or a recording as I ask myself & my wife what was actually meant… a bit to talk about with each other & the kids that day.

Three point sermons may seem boring or predictable at times but I am learning that they are much better than trying to keep track of projected atomic audio that the minister may fully understand in his own mind but translates a lot differently to the listeners.

The measure of a man: Colin Buchanan

I like Colin Buchanan’s songs, an Australian Christian country musician as much as a Christian singer & songwriter for kids & grownups. His songs can be thoughtful & fun. When the Patriarchs like Abraham, Isaac & Jacob came to a place of special significance they would give it a name. Country musicians do it with song seeking to capture the thing or place. They allow me to appreciate a significance that is not always noticeable at first glance.

This version (live January 2013 Tamworth) which is instrumentally beautiful has some off key backup vocals. Overall I find I can walk with this song, I find I can sit with this song, it doesn’t lift me up but it talks quietly with me, revealing an injustice that has to do with the white settlement/takeover of Australia to the detriment of the Indigenous/native people.

Green is Good

In the church & because of Christ we are to consider one another better than ourselves but that doesn’t mean the minister is going to ask you to do a sermon any time soon. Our cohesion is more about humility & sacrifices whatever role we may be given in the church community which is the body of Christ.

Blessed are the peacemakers is less about a circle with a birds footprint in the middle & more about Christ & his example of humility. The moment we seek to walk this path is the moment our old nature & the Devil will try to reverse the situation & the duel will begin…welcome to Screw tape Inc. C.S Lewis may say. God gives us the heads up in this regard, but sadly we can take His instruction in the negative like a laborious music lesson or educational homework…really God, really? God wants what is best & we often want what comes easy but easy isn’t necessarily sharp, clear & distinguishable.

To be heard clearly we need to hit the right place, to hit the right place we need to know what distinguishes one place from another & practise is a great help in this regard, it matters & people notice. It’s not easy being green someone or something once said but you have to start somewhere & do the best with what you’re given.

Gallons of Grace

I'm only human; I'm just a man
Help me believe in what I could be and all that I am

Show me the stairway

I have to climb
Lord for my sake
Teach me to take
One day at a time

One day at a time, sweet Jesus

That's all I'm asking from you

Give me the strength to do everything that I have to do
Yesterday's gone sweet Jesus
And tomorrow may never be mine
Help me today
Show me the way
One day at a time.

Could you remember

When you walked among men

Jesus, you know when you're looking below
It's worse now than then
Pushin' and shovin' crowd in your mind
Lord for my sake
Teach me to take
One day at a time

Preface: It's Country Music week here in New South Wales Australia with a music festival kicking off in Tamworth & every day belongs to God.

When I hear or remember this song it’s usually with a country twang, maybe it’s first impressions & all that. The beauty about this song is not only that it speaks of the Saviour but also that the Saviour knows what it’s like to walk this earth & the spiritual struggles that ensue.

Even in church people who confess the fellowship of the saints & pastors who profess to pastor can be missing in action although present & accounted for. More than likely we ourselves have missed opportunities to be what God intends us to be…for all our strengths we can be weak & miserable…& that’s the beauty of much country music, it reflects the struggles & brokenness in our lives, woe is me.

At this point, when the temptation may be strong to turn to despair & drink & whatever else may sooth the situation the song writer opts for a remedy that comes from heaven itself. Calling on God, who hears our prayers & knows our plight no matter how hard things may have been or may get.

Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you.1 Peter 5:7

The Big Picture

Jesus said to her,
 “I am the resurrection
 and the life.
 Anyone who believes in me
will live, even though they die,
 and whoever lives by
believing in me will never die.
 Do you believe this?”
 “Yes, Lord,” she told him,
“I believe that you are the Messiah,
 the Son of God,
who was to come into the world.”
John 11; 25-27

Like a lifeless fossil unable to make sound or movement, only a remnant of what it once was after being struck down by calamity on a grand scale, death takes hold of the physical & then encases. Layers of earthly dust & rocks contaminate the scene. The sun in its splendor begins to arise, like the calamity we have no say in it... Its glory spreads forth, brighter by the moment as it leaves the horizon behind, witnessing to things far greater than things merely human.

Morning has broken
Like the first morning,
Black bird has spoken
Like the first bird.
Praise the singing!
Praise for the morning!
Praise for them springing
Fresh from the Word!

Sweet the rain's new fall
Sunlit from heaven,
Like the first dewfall
On the first grass.
Praise for the sweetness
Of the wet garden,
Sprung in completeness
Where His feet pass.

Mine is the sunlight!
Mine is the morning.
Born of the one light
Eden saw play!
Praise with elation,
Praise ev'ry morning,
God's recreation
Of the newday!

The long road & the short cut

The Pharisees made extra laws that did not reflect the holiness of God & thus fell into legalism, a marred practise that destroys the image of pure religion & the beauty of God.

On the other hand we may look into Gods Word & make decision based on it creating an application to our lives that can bring glory to God. This is not mere opinion but Bible based, faith based living for which we must give account.

The Bible is given that the church may be equipped, it can be poor & lazy teaching that leads to confusion not necessarily the complexity of the Bible at times. Blunt instead of sharp, ineffective rather than effective. It is for this reason among many that Paul urges Timothy to permit no slackness of effort as he is instructed to trust in God & lean not on his own understanding.

It’s not just the spiritually lost who are at stake, but also the spiritually mature & immature. Having a church full of vague & casual Christians could easily equate to a church of Pharisees in terms of usefulness to God.

In the sight of God, who gives life to everything, and of Christ Jesus, who while testifying before Pontius Pilate made the good confession, I charge you,  to keep this command without spot or blame until the appearing of our Lord Jesus Christ, which God will bring about in his own time—God, the blessed and only Ruler, the King of kings and Lord of lords, who alone is immortal and who lives in unapproachable light, whom no one has seen or can see. To him be honor and might forever. Amen. 1 Timothy 6: 13-16

yes...even better than life...

Australia day is officially January 26. The shops are ready with the merchandise, some T shirts have already been withdrawn due to cultural insensitivity & the Aboriginal peoples belonging to this land long before white settlement.

In this often sun burnt land with long hot summers (usually) it will also be an opportunity for a long (3 day) weekend with a public holiday on the Monday, a time to reflect & celebrate who or what we are as a people within a nation & as a nation among nations.

For many years now Australia has had a Lambassador who speaks on behalf of the Meat & livestock trade in the build up to Australia day & the land of the long smoky BBQ cloud. Basically…with an air humour, if you consider yourself Australian then you should be eating lamb.

Many local churches will run posters regarding the lamb, out front of the church building to create Gospel interest & awareness. At this time of year the poster is as follows….

According to Scripture, this lamb is to die for & is better than life itself. This is not an over statement of exaggeration like many adds but recognises that life without God is no life at all when all is said & done. John the Baptist recognised who Jesus was & eventually died for him. John was a man of words, faith & action…John 1:29…how about us.

You, God, are my God, earnestly I seek you; I thirst for you, my whole being longs for you, in a dry
and parched land where there is no water. I have seen you in the sanctuary and beheld your power
and your glory. Because your love is better than life, my lips will glorify you. Psalm 63: 1-3

Not quite right @ the BBC

Qi can be quite interesting & funny, but… every now & then Stephen Fry takes offence @ Christianity. This time it was the lyrics to “All things bright & beautiful” because of suffering or death in the present insect world when a wasp provides for its young by taking a cockroach captive & keeping it alive but drugged so that its young may feed. (extra content)

So often Bible critics can be quite ignorant & get things back to front & misunderstand the fall & the devastation that followed due to Gods wise instruction not being followed. For the time being death remains with all its misery as a consequence of rebellion, yet a better day awaits children of faith as they have escaped destruction. Enjoying now the healing hand of salvation & the saving knowledge of Christ through His spirit we also look to the promise of a new heaven & a new earth. This is the hope that is found for the once lost.

The wolf will live with the lamb,
the leopard will lie down with the goat,
the calf and the lion and the yearling
together and a little child will lead them.
The cow will feed with the bear,
their young will lie down together,
and the lion will eat straw like the ox.
Infants will play near the hole of the cobra,
young children will put their hands into the viper’s nest.
They will neither harm nor destroy on all my holy mountain,
for the earth will be filled with the knowledge of the LORD
as the waters cover the sea.
Isaiah 11:6-9

And the truth remains…God created all things, they were wonderfully made & it’s great to sing
about it.

God saw all that he had made, and it was very good. And there was evening, and there was morning—the sixth day.  Thus the heavens and the earth were completed in all their vast array.

Genesis 1:31& 2:1

I am hoping to catch some televised Dakar action seeing the 2014 rally is now under way. 9000 km’s of off road action travelling through Argentina, Bolivia & Chile.

Before I was old enough to get a driver’s licence much time with my friends & I was spent riding dirt bikes. I had to sell my first dirt bike in order to pay the fines I received from riding my bike illegally. We started off on dragsters, then took to BMX bikes then went to 80cc motorbikes. I almost lived on my 250 after getting my Learner plates & would often ride dirt tracks & fire trails until the sun went down.

How long is a piece of DNA

It’s in my DNA, It’s in our DNA…it is becoming a common phrase these days. This could be talking about a personal situation, a shared human experience or even a non - human experience. In a poetic sense it could be taken even further.

It has been claimed that our DNA sets us closely related to chimps only to be found out that turtles & bananas are up there as contenders. Percentages can be deceptive like many stats they don’t tell the entire story or give a true context. (peel back a layer)

Although created by God the Spirit, wether male or female we bear His image, albeit a corrupted image after the fall & curse in the beautiful garden created by God for our enjoyment that we might know God, human intimacy, animal management & the bounteous garden.

So we share many things on this earth but still retain many things unique that set us apart within our kinds as God intended.

Beautiful visual interpretation of a fruit/banana tree

Wat's on TV

Generally speaking...

Religious = Dumb + Scientific= Intelligent, that’s the way it is apparently if you believe all the rumours. So what happens when someone is religious & scientific…well that depends but it usually pans out like this…anti-religious = intelligence whereas religious = dumb if you believe all the rumours & claims of evidence & facts which may as well be rumours for all their assertions.

Sadly much of the science is speculation with a pre-ordained narrative… anything that is likely to fit the story is shaped to fit & what doesn’t is kept pretty quiet. Often the story telling is graphically animated with a quick reference that diverts widely away from the clear & present behind the scenes controversy & thus we are led to believe the rumour…

religious = dumb + scientific = intelligence.

Of course things are not always what they seem, there is much more than meets the eye, many a detective will tell you that & so will a religious person…its elementary, 21st century elementary.
