Much to discover

2017 and the year that was. Technologically speaking and requiring a new camera due to an aging and error prone one, I was unsure about going for a drone (humming sound) that would have been lots of fun or a hand held camera more suited to what I seem to keep on doing and enjoying (getting up close and personal with the animal kingdom). So I stuck with the hand held but changed camera brands (Canon DSLR to Sony mirrorless) mostly because of a viewfinder that operates in video mode as well as a good sale price and bonus offer.

This year I have also switched from two pairs of glasses to multi-focals so I need to practise my gimbaling as I get used to some new things for 2018 among other things like which products have they switched around on the supermarket shelves plus an online & prac certified education course.

We always seem to be updating and breaking down, such is life and technology post fall as we wrestle with the same old problems. Theologically speaking, in God we actually get better as we grow and age in Him regarding all things necessary for body and soul whether our circumstances be happy or sad we are forever blessed in God who actually means what He says. May we each know this and grow in it by God’s grace for the year ahead. Psalm 103:1-22.

Firework and work of fire

Scripture indicates clearly that the earth was made by design for a purpose and that there was nothing accidental or freakish about it. Furthermore, like a house, the lighting came after the main structure of earth was made. Genesis.1:14-15.

Days, months and years harmoniously sit well at the table with our bodies, our food supply and our need for rest and the distant but near animal kingdom. Far from the idea of half ape- half human like ancestors, humanity began as intelligent beings with a culture that differs from the animal world and the non- living but oh so powerful sun and moon.

What about God though, does He sit well with you at the table? Is He a companion, a friend and freely mentioned in your home or perhaps an enemy or an alien or someone or something you put up with a bit…

Scripture like the heavens proclaims wisdom that all comes together in Christ, a glorious  unifying factor of purpose and redemption and a genuine fellowship that is up close and personal and reaches to the heavens and beyond time and space and into eternity.Col 1:15-23.

Terms of reference

Usually the context of “be you” or “be yourself” is in comparison to others from what I can tell. No need to be a copycat, don’t get sucked into that. Yet in many respects God calls us to copy or imitate Christ and even others as examples that have gone before us in the family of faith and adoption.

And how can we be truly original anyway with all that genetic and behavioural information that can serve us well just as much as undermine us. No you are not just like your mother or father or brother or sister or doppelganger, although similarities and differences may exist for God’s good reasons. You are unique!

In this we are all different with different personalities, likes and dislikes. But none of these things can be used as an excuse to not walk in God’s ways in which we all fall terribly short, each in our own way.John 12:41-50.

Learning to be you takes time as does learning to be like God and trusting in His Spirit to do the work He said He would as we are all called to walk in obedience. Meanwhile this demanding world is very often telling and suggesting as to how we should live life with its phony ideas of success and happiness and what it claims matters the most.

more than nature that does and does not nurture

Scripture is full of observation, insight and reason as it proclaims and records the necessity of a life to be lived by faith in the living God. Scripture is also often misunderstood due to a lack of knowledge. In God there is distinction as he casts His eye upon the lives of ‘men’. Psalm 1:1- 6. is not a song that alludes to perfection and prosperity but speaks to a resolution that rejects the ungodly outlook on life.

We all have our ups and downs and there is no one who is sinless whether you are a believer or not. Nevertheless this is not an equaliser as if we can all do good and bad things so it doesn't really matter if we believe in God or not for it truly matters whom we follow and why. To be naive about such things is not an ignorance that produces bliss. Those that reject God are blown away like chaff and the life lived by faith in God will bear the kind of fruit that matters. Blessed and watered by the stream a crop of fruit is produced.

My soul finds rest in God alone

Ecclesiastes is a beautiful book and one among many that sit beautifully together in unity that weaves knowledge and wisdom with truth and eternity. Yes life is big and God is bigger still. Life is confusing and many things appear to be random or driven by chance and there is much sadness and injustice as we yearn for fulfilment and joy for ourselves or others.

We may look to find fullness in family, friends, work, activities and pleasurable things as we seek to map out our path in the pages of history with its alleged winners and losers. But when all is said and done if you are not on the same page as God then you are out of sync with meaning and purpose.

Just as the sun in all its glory was made for earth the same wisdom gives light to our lives. The wisdom imparted from God provides just what we need and is for our good.  While many want to compare this nation to that nation or this planet to that planet in God we are given all that we need.

The goose chase, the rat race, the space race and so on do not and cannot compare to what God has done and is doing in the year that was and in the year ahead. God is more than music, more than maths, more than science & language and more than life.

In the midst of ruggedness and fragility and enduring love

There is a wisdom in creation, mystery and wonder
Problems to solve, puzzles to ponder

Praise to the maker divinely sublime
All will be revealed in each fullness of time

Breezes and wind, cycles and swirls
lands and oceans with beautiful pearls

Seasons and days turn like a page
another book ends, and an end of an age

New years, new births new days the Lord brings
King of all is the King of Kings.

Great is His faithfulness, great is His love
The wonderful Saviour who rose above

Spirit and Word and gifts for his bride
he loves her so deeply and it shall abide.

Great is His faithfulness, great is His love
The wonderful Saviour who rose above

In an often changing world we still remain the same

We may marvel at a supercomputer and we see how robots and artificial intelligence are being steered to become more human but the idea that an all knowing, all wise God seems an offence to many, even if He comes to us in human form.

As a society we prefer the make believe of non living matter quickening to life by some naturalistic miracle and a super stretched logical possibility so highly improbable. Such is the underlying bias as we compete for God like status.

That God should humble himself unto death and make payment so we may live in a loving and true relationship with Him now and forever is better than the best medicine money can buy. God provides a healing and restoration that speaks to our eternal soul and living/dying bodies so bruised by the fall of our own inherited doing.

Our machines are an extension of the intelligence that comes from God as we express it with improved but just as limited knowledge and the next best thing. Jesus is an extension of God's being that brings peace and love in measures beyond this world and into the next.

God speaks to the heart of the matter and the solution is only to be found in Christ. All other ground is sinking sand. As much as we may try we cannot save ourselves and rejecting God's solution will only increase our woe further.John 3:16-21.

A stage, a backdrop and changing scenes

Going beyond the actual revelation and into the supposed narratives is something humanity is prone to do and we see this same pattern with supposed missing links that don’t match up to what is required to become transitional fossils. In essence, leaps of faith abound in what is claimed to be a field about facts.

Thank the Lord for historical documents and copied manuscripts that reveal to us what various disciplines and studies cannot do as good as those things can be. There is a good faith inspired reason to build our lives upon the rock instead of shifting sands and it’s not so much about a roof over our heads but a life and a living relationship with the living God of time and space.

Side tracking God and being enveloped in what He has made for intellectual purposes with a few practical spin offs is a bridge too far from what I can tell. Fill the earth and subdue it in a post fall world that requires the great commission and godly living seems to be where it is at for me.

But of course nations will compete with nations for glory and power as they follow a phenomena. Matt 24:1-8.

Jeremiah was a bullfrog, Jesus is King

At one with nature can mean a lot of things but at its core I would think there is an underlying objective to reject the rat race and modern tools and infrastructure where possible. We seem to think nature has many hidden answers and rhythms that are there for the taking if we just knew how to tune in.

This is why much ancient knowledge is revered at times, especially when measured against the corporate greed of pharmaceuticals & chemicals that can do just as much harm as good. But so can nature. Much of it is deadly.

In the Bible we see all these things. Beautiful perfect nature once so harmonious & giving after the curse becomes a corrupted burden. But there is no way back in terms of human effort even if the whole world were to work as one.

We cannot undo the curse in our own strength try as we might. The new heaven and earth will come and the restoration of a new humanity from every tribe and tounge. The way is in Jesus alone who gives us a picture of what it will be like, at one with God, at one with each other and nature. I can’t think of anything better than that. Isaiah 11:1-9."Joy to the world, the Lord is come, let earth receive her King."

numero uno

The virgin birth, the Immaculate Conception and Mary’s question, “How can this be since I am a virgin?” Luke 1:34. There are arguments around to reason away the miracle that seek to allude to virgin meaning young women but Mary doesn’t buy into that context.

In the modern world many will gladly entertain and accept the illogical & irrational idea of non-living matter miraculously appearing as living matter but will not accept the power of and wisdom of God. Conditioned by scientific dogma & mantras the modern mind is shaped by contradiction and bias.

Oh how convenient that an angel appeared is another criticism but an angel appearing doesn’t guarantee obedience any more than fearfulness, just look to the very old and doubting Zechariah. The modern myths fall apart under scrutiny yet the disciple’s adamant message for humanity remains the same.1 John 1:1-10. Jesus is whom He said He was & is & is to come and in Him are truth, redemption and freedom. There is none like Him.

Its why we sing about Him, it's why we pray to Him and go to church to hear about Him again and again. He alone is truly good in fullest and purest measure and just as needed and relevant today.

Waiting for the day

Israel had become an indiscernible mess of idolatry and God pronounced a judgement upon her/him. Yet within the judgement comes a promise that Elijah shall return before a greater judgement. And then it is as if God were silent as the night or Zechariah the husband of Elizabeth after the rebuke from Gabriel. Malachi 4:1-6. Four hundred years pass and the eternal watchman slumbers not. Psalm 121:1-8. God corresponds in human flesh and angelic pronouncement to those "that mourn in lonely exile" amidst the might and ingenuity of Rome that swarms the land like locusts that devour.

In Transit

He went there to register with Mary, who was pledged to be married to him and was expecting a child. Luke 2:5.

There is no mention of a donkey for the journey that Joseph and Mary took to Bethlehem for Caesar's census, or that the number of wise men were three when they came to worship the newly born king, so there is a bit of artistic license in biblical art at times. A donkey would not be out of place though.Luke 19:30-38.

The babe in the manger would grow up in the Spirit of the Lord and yearly would travel to Jerusalem for the passover.Luke 2:41-52.

Whom or what do you serve.

In the Christ child lays a deep mystery that shall be revealed over a relatively young life span across the pages of Scripture. For in Him is deliverance and promise of universal and eternal proportion including dominions unknown to the current laws of limited nature. The modern world tends to favour impersonal algorithms and mathematical data along with the unobservable and miraculous in astronomy and biology as we become clothed in machines, robotics, electronics and circular secular knowledge. But this all springs from our unique humanity that sets us apart and which beforehand sprung from God in the first place.

To those that claim that God does not care or God does not act or God is dead ought to be reminded that it is really humanity that does not care or is not really interested in God despite the created order that beholds a witness to the creator and dismisses the Christ as a mere human that does not amount to whom He said he was.

In essence it is not God that is dead but the heart of humanity which would rather settle for the consumption of possession’s and measures of human greatness over and above the God who made all things and came to us in humility and truth to us who are blinded by our unjustified and foolish pride. The bah humbug snub to God as if he doesn’t really matter or we shouldn’t really be that joyful over something amazing as Christmas seems to me an amazing gesture of unbelief or an identity crisis where we are coerced to hide our true selves away as if we were an island of lepers filled with shame or guilt or misery.Luke 1:46-80. Scripture tells us Mary or Zechariah wouldn’t choose that path. In all the diversity and  idealised equality that existed in more ancient times also,God still calls His people to come out and be separate. Just as God separated the seas from the sky and land and created various creatures for various functions we are to serve God and love Him as He loves us with all our hearts and lives and only in His boldness and grace can we be a transformed and renewed people to declare His praise.

Consistent God, faithful God.

Whatever Caesar Augustus may have imagined regarding his temporal greatness in history and his instigated government census to grasp the measure of his kingdom, God’s seemingly insignificant people continued to live and walk by faith.

In the midst of apparent greatness a greater kingdom is at work and so it is today on any given political landscape until all things are accomplished. Yes many are busy making history and greatness in the hall of fame for fifteen minutes of glory and power and dominion. Cities, towns, nations and peoples. 2 Kings 5:12-14.Time and again God provides the simplest of things, seemingly weak & useless and unimportant.

Striking and satisfying God

You answer us with awesome and righteous deeds, God our Savior, the hope of all the ends of the earth and of the farthest seas, Psalm 65:5.

This is a satisfaction song and that satisfaction is found in God alone, God who forgives sin in infinite mercy and boundless grace and the God who blesses the earth so that we may be fed. It is an unbroken hallelujah of praise and adoration that has no hint of somber and sad tones or macabre tunes.

Like the abundance of a generous host and table spread with good things and a wonderful fellowship of peace and harmony. It doesn’t get any better than knowing God who alone can satisfy, He has come into our fragmented brokenness that we may be made whole.

Joyful, joyful, we adore Thee,
God of glory, Lord of love;
Hearts unfold like flow’rs before Thee,
Op’ning to the sun above.
Melt the clouds of sin and sadness;
Drive the dark of doubt away;
Giver of immortal gladness,
Fill us with the light of day!

Henry J van Dyke 1907.

Rethinking that big big story

When science goes beyond science all kinds of things are asserted.
But dig a little deeper and the limitations become obviously apparent.
In as much as evolution is claimed to be science it is more a case of yehnah.

We Three Kings

The capes and crowns are gone but the finer things in life are still very much a part of, and make many of us distinguishable from, the ruling elite in our modern era. The not so lavish stable seems a most unfitting place for a mother to give birth and a child & king to be born let alone the maker of heaven & earth bound up in the promises made to Abraham and the covenants that followed. Yet that is where the great light led the wise men from the east with their gifts and homage. Matt 2:1-12.

Heaven's door came down

Vincent Willem van Gogh & the Christmas tree

The borrowed visual image is big in the 21st Century. Semi plagiarised, semi photo shopped & re-contextualised images that bear out our reality. A mind meld, a cryptic nod of similarity and difference to the past. The poor ‘man's’ modern art that is often an expression of humour…we like to have a laugh.

OT Israel was often reminded to look back at its iconic history. Places and people in time that had memorial and historical significance for the present. But it wasn’t for a laugh but a time of serious reflection, thanksgiving and deep joy for what God had done to redeem them from the oppressor in the house of slavery.

And it is the same today for the church/people who belong to the Lord Jesus Christ. With even more significance than a world war the Christ child came to bring peace to a world in rebellion and therefore at war with God. This peace that came at great cost is for all the nations and also the promise of a renewed created order. Nothing compares to it, nothing at all, here on earth or beyond into the vast array of blackened space and shining swirling stars of great proportion and scale that also must submit to the wisdom and order of the Mighty God who holds all things in His hands (so to speak). Isaiah 9:2-7.

Pure love, pure light, pure life.

If you take note of the media you probably have noticed the ‘powerful men’ thing in relation to sexual advances and favours where pressure is placed upon women to give into the advancement or suggestion.

Biblically speaking one of the first incidents that come to mind is David & Bathsheba and Scripture is not without its rape and seduction stories either which speaks of our fallen and sinful nature as we seek gratification and pleasure or power in places that we should not go as we reap what we sow. “These are the days of our lives where the bold and the beautiful are young and restless and bored.”(Compilation of American cultural icons) Naturally we want to glory in anything other than God and His ways unless it gives us advantage.

This is again the message of Christmas. God has come into our mess, our darkness, our shame that we shall be set free from bondage and decay and called to holy living. Eph 5:1-5. Not the secular or worldly holy of trial by media or gossip and selective morality and memory but an almighty holy, holy, holy where it is God whom measures the depths of the human heart  against the purity of His eternal & discerning Spirit. Isaiah 6:3. And this again is the message of Christmas. An almighty all powerful God mighty to save lays aside His Glory, abhors not the virgin’s womb and comes to us for our sakes for we are not able to save ourselves from the sting with it's misery of sin and death.

There are  powerful angels and a powerful God who does what is just and good. And He is at work in this sad world of worry and woe so much in need of healing. Thine be the power and the glory, for ever and ever amen.

Thermodynamics, aerodynamics and society dynamics

Busy, busy, busy, busier. It’s that time of year when things are coming to an end (like creation itself) and many parties and gatherings are being organised to celebrate that in the name of Christmas, Xmas and holidays.

As a nation that has opened up to multiculturalism and hyper capitalism and hybrid socialism there are a lot of mixed messages and influences that pervade our high and low and deplorable societies as Asia turns into the Middle east and Europe and the America’s and Oceania.

Linguistically out of Babel with accent and biologically out of Eden with pigmentation & Biogenesis we roam. East, west, north and south, united in division and déjà vu as we seek power and might to obtain prosperity and peace and a dominant mainstream culture.

The encouragement to assimilate is strong, the subtle suggestions and bold assertions to forget about God and His Word which apparently have no relevant place in the 21st Century seem endless. Christianity is assigned its place in an inner room out of sight and out of mind.

The great I AM my own boss and my own god of the modern secular is proudly unconnected to the God who made all things. Seemingly neutral but very geared and very loaded the convoy rumbles and rattles.

Majestic Array

“Christ, by highest heaven adored - Christ, the everlasting Lord
Late in time behold him come - Offspring of the Virgin's womb

Late in time…not the late that has been brought about by unforeseen circumstances but late as in observation over a span of time and a figure of speech. And neither was the Christ child early but exactly on time (something the Japanese and a NASA like culture would see as a most honourable thing).

Like the precisely timed music interlaced with instruments and song the angels declare praise to God and witness to the shepherds who in turn visit the Christ child, the Messiah and long expected Jesus wrapped in cloths and layed in a manger. Isaiah 11:1-11.

The Creator God lays His Glory down and humbly takes on the veil of human flesh.Such is His love.
